Over the last little while some things have happened on the internet that caught my interest. Apparently there was some conference for “social media” people, something about Northern Voices? I don’t even know. (I am a little out of the loop but I guess I will talk about that later.)

Anyways, this whole thing started about how the event was labeled as “child friendly” but then there was some freakout cause some person’s kid was being loud during the keynote and so they were asked to leave. I am not even sure why I am sharing this part with you because I really have no interest in talking about kids other than to say this: you made a decision to breed but that doesn’t mean your kid has the right to disrupt events that other adults paid for.

But because of this whole internet explosion I happened upon other local bloggers who either attended or participated in the event. The whole social media thing is kind of weird to me… I mean yes ok I use twitter and facebook and I have this blog and I have Twitpic and a neglected tumblr and lord knows what else. But I don’t really care about it. I use those things to share what I’m doing but I rarely worry about who I am sharing it all with (I’m doin’ it wrong, I know I know).

But yes. I am rambling. So two things:

1. This post on how to overcome social anxiety using social media is hilarious to me. Mostly because I have actually used the pants thing as an excuse not to do stuff. Well not just pants; sometimes it extends to entire outfits – I rarely feel comfortable in anything. But yes. Funny. Go read.

2. The internet. I feel weird about the internet. I write this blog mostly for me, despite joking about my desire to become internet famous. The truth is I have too many self-confidence issues to be internet famous. It’s just not going to happen. But sometimes I think I should be more engaging with what I write here, and perhaps on twitter (which I use mostly to clear out the incessant chatter in my brain).

But then again I always find it so transparent and a little cheesy when people dig for comments. Like “hey guys, I really love raspberry jam, what kind do you love the best?” Who honestly gives a crap? I can see if you’re actually asking for advice but to me it just comes off as a cheap ploy to get comments and give the illusion of engaging with your readers, and if you haven’t noticed I am not really in that business (probably should be though).

I know that sounds awful but I guess I am just looking for more substance. Like let’s say I love raspberry jam (totally do) and maybe you know of a good recipe to make it and you share that with me, that would be awesome. You know? And I guess I don’t ask you to do that because I assume if you really wanted to you would just do it but maybe other people need more prompting?

Which I guess brings me to my third point that I did not even mention because I forgot about it until now.

The older I get, the more I am starting to realize that I am a very visual person. I don’t usually want to read long wordy entries because frankly I think I have maybe some attention issues and I just can’t pay attention for very long. You have to be super interesting for me to read a lot of words, like really the most interesting ever, and even then I can’t promise I won’t be distracted by something shiny.

So, in a nutshell: if you blog, and you want people like me to read your blog, for the love of all that is holy, post pictures. I’d much rather look at pictures of your trip to the beach than read about how you sat on a dead crab and got sand in your pants, ok?

So now I will take my own advice and post some pictures of what I’ve been up to.

Maine convinced me to put on pants this evening so we went for a quick walk to Nanaimo street, and then back up along the bike path (this made me miss my bike so much. Does anyone know how to fix coaster brakes? I might be able to do a tradesies?)

100_4752

Mostly I took pictures of flowers. Zzzzzzzzzz. But seriously spring is so amazing and I love it so hard. We found a bunch of rose bushes and I got all weird like when you take a dog for a walk to a park and it finds something delightfully gross to roll in.

I really love how soft the new needles are on pine trees. They make me happy. That is probably a bit weird.

Also this morning I worked on some weaving. I decided to try using handspun in the warp, which is a thing our instructor told us not to do, but I think the only reason she told us was because handspun can kinda… fall apart if it is not spun very well.

I was using the grey romney fleece that I over-dyed with fuchsia, and well, one thing I learned is probably I should have set the twist before attempting to warp up.

100_4720

However I am the most impatient ever and don’t really mind battling unruly yarn.

100_4729

Seriously, I had to get this through the heddles still.

But as you can see I eventually did get it to cooperate. Unfortunately, romney is kind of scratchy (ok really scratchy) but I thought it would be good to test it out. I might bust out the drop spindle and get some squishy delightful merino going later.

Bert pretended to sleep while I warped up and watched What Not To Wear. I am pretending that this is kind of my job except no one is paying me yet. Oh and maybe I will talk about that later, the whole job search thing. Cause I am discovering things about myself that are kind of good to know but also not very conducive to making dollars.

Until next time,
Keep Fit and Have Fun!

P.S. That reminds me I should also tell you about that time I did the 30 Day Shred video the other morning and how I am still hurting. Damn you, Jillian Michaels. You are an asshat.

cruiser bikes are amazing and generally easy to work on, except if they have coaster brakes. i built my own cruiser with some help and they were the biggest pain in the butt. usually if something is wrong with them it has to do with the hub itself. there’s lots of stuff on the internet but it’s a little complicated. definitely easier if someone is showing you. good luck!

yeah, i am pretty sure i’m just going to have to buy a new wheel and hub thing. but i am the poorest ever. sad day. i have another crappy bike that i bought to paint and fix up so i might just busy myself with that instead, i think it will cost less dollars.

This is what I’ve learned about the Internet:

Social media people are people who talk about writing interesting things on the Internet but don’t actually do it. They are writing about writing. It’s masturbation.

Conferences always have stupid controversies because that way people talk about the conference because otherwise nobody would give a shit. It happens at programmer conferences too. Like, one presenter always puts a slide with a girl in a bikini or makes a racist joke and politically correct people get super angry and then everyone’s talking about the conference. And they get more attendees next year. It’s a SOCIAL MEDIA TRICK.

By the way, if you start an etsy store you should mention cool things you have for sale on your blog once in a while.

Finally, I will try and put more pictures in my blog.

OMG I LOVE RASPBERRY JAM TOO!! IT IS LIKE WE ARE THE SAME PERSON.

I have no idea how making jam or canning works, but I would like to? Maybe we can learn together one time?

PS I read that thing on how the internet will get rid of your social anxiety, and I agree that it is complete bullshit.

Yes, I AM that far behind in my google reader that I just read your entry from 2 weeks ago and am now responding.

I had to see if you read The Bloggess. This chick is nuts. Ok, she does write really long rambly entries that are pretty much just for her readers BUT she fully admits she’s got anxiety out the yin yang and she even wears a wig when she has to go to speaking engagements because it helps. http://thebloggess.com/ Personally, I feel like it’s pretty entertaining.

2nd, I’ll try to do more photos, I’m trying to just post regularly as it is and it seems to be all wordy book reviews that don’t actually review or summarize but merely a rant about it.

Oh, I like book reviews! I never know what to read, I have no idea how people choose books. I mean I know they say not to choose a book by it’s cover but I definitely do that, hahaha. Sometimes it works out ok. But how do other people do it? Is there like a list that exists that is all “These books are worth your time”? (Uhh, I guess that would be like a Best Sellers list hahaha)
