The rumors are true. Spring is springing a lot earlier than it should. Welcome to Vancouver, home of the 2010 Spring Olympics, brought to you by Global Warming or El Niño or something.
So you know how people do a thing where you show what is in your purse? Today I am going to do a thing where I show you what I just hauled around in my backpack, because it was like one million pounds of omg.
I had to go pick up more art supplies and also some groceries and somehow managed to fit most of it into my backpack. I should mention this backpack is meant for mountaineering, so it fits quite a bit, and I do not really know where it came from but finders keepers ok?
I decided to weigh it using the Wii Fit to see how heavy it actually was. Also Val has not used this in 600 days so it kind of scolded me/her.
Proof that robots are not the best when it comes to losing weight in a healthy way.
Ok, on to the stuff!
I don’t know why I labeled all this all, as I am sure you can figure it out but here you go anyways.
1. black beans 2. green leaf lettuce 3. cilantro 4. butter 5. tiny mandarin oranges 6. baby carrots 7. pear yogurt 8. 1% milk 9. bananas 10. cantaloupe 11. red pepper 12. cucumber 13. tomatoes 14. gala apples 15. corn 16. mixed beans
17. fake fur for weaving (I have to weave a thing that represents a polar bear) 18. sketch book (on sale!) 19. embroidery hoops 20. embroidery floss 21. sock yarn ($2 each!) 22. embroidery floss organized that i am planning to use as my sample book for when we dye wool. it was 99 cents!) 23. bulldog clips 24. measuring tape (not pictured – kraft paper for drawing)
25. Lady Grey tea from Steeps 26. Creative Zen Vision:M that I bought in like 2004 I think? and it is still motoring away 27. Moroccan Mint green tea from Teaz 28. GREEN TEAM Sigg 29. charger for the Zen 30. Fleece Artist mohair gifted from Rebecca 31. Quebecoise yarn lifted from the school for weaving 32. masking tape (also there are random yarns/threads from weaving)
The funny thing is at the grocery store I tetris’d all my stuff in to avoid getting a plastic bag, and then the girl behind me in line had her things double bagged.
Oh also I went to Ikea the other day and picked up a desk, but I saw this and I died a little inside because I cannot have it, even at half off.
This really does not capture the majestic yellow as well as it should.
This hat is basically amazing but is child (aka Steph) sized.
Sad times for me (and good times for Maine) that this only came in twin size.
We had delicious meatballs for lunch, and also TUBORG. Is it weird that I only like Ikea gravy? I am not really interested in gravy in general. Perhaps it is the addition of lingonberry that really seals the deal.
So I bought the Expedit desk in white to go with my shelf. I asked Jeff if he thought it would fit in the trunk and he said yes, but then it actually did not so a thing had to happen with ties and stuff to get it home. But it’s here now, although I haven’t set it up yet (probably will do that on the weekend as I have to clean up a bit first and well it’s already 5 pm and I should go wake up Tremaine now ok bye.)
So last night we’re sitting in the living room when all of the sudden I hear this big POP and then see sort of a flash. Then it happened again! And quickly we realized Mr. Nova-caine had been chewing the crap out of the cord for our space heater and had just managed to electrocute himself. High five!
He’s ok, I mean, like he’s not hurt but um I don’t know if he’s ok. Cause secretly I think he liked it.
Anyways, Internet, what’s new? What’s shakin’? I am sort of obsessed with the rocks outside my art history classroom. They look awesome when wet, and well, we live in Vancouver so basically yes wet is a thing that happens. By the way, did you hear they had to close Cypress to preserve the snow? Why yes, yes we are having the 2010 Winter Olympics in 3 weeks or so. Or at least, we are supposed to. Ha!
Yesterday morning it monsoon’d so hard and then in the afternoon, it looked like this:
Winter Olympics indeed. (Thanks global warming! – seriously how do people even for a second believe that this is not a real and terrifying thing?)
While I was waiting for the bus yesterday I played a game called how many people will stare at me as they drive by. I think I got bored and stopped counting at about 12. I wasn’t even really super the most ridiculous yesterday I don’t think? But I had to carry home the Loom of Doom so maybe they were like “what is in that gigantor bag?”
Oh by the way we had our first drawing class on Thursday. Good times, good times. The instructor is Kiff Holland, and it turns out he is real rad at making watercolour happen. I don’t know. I mean I assume the instructors know what they are doing but I think it is pretty sweet that basically all of my teachers are super awesome at art. Though it is also a little intimidating.
I took a first year art class when I was at UBC and one of the major major differences, other than having an established art guy instructor at Cap (my UBC one was a grad student I think?), is the room where we get to draw is also sweet. I remember having class in kind of a dingy grey almost warehouse kind of room at UBC. Not very inspiring.
Love this so hard.
Anyways, so the first class we had to pick a partner (someone we didn’t know, which was hard cause half the class was textile arts people) and draw them, but also introduce them, so we had to ask them questions. So basically there were 15 people in the class, so one person got left out and guess who that person was… Yes, yes. Me. I dunno I am not good at selecting partners.
So this meant that I had to interview and draw Kiff, and hello scary like having to both talk and draw someone who is a stranger and also the instructor and also way better at stuff than I am. Good times.
Ok so last thing is I am in the market currently for a cute flash drive, and I saw a Hello Kitty one at Voltage but like hell I am paying $40 for one. SO I am on the eBay looking and I don’t know if I should trust a $4 drive from China. What do you guys think?
Oh! And also I just want to say I am suddenly obsessed with phở and I think I need to wake Maine up now so we can go get some for lunch.
What’s up, the internet? Guess what we started doing at school!
Basically the hardest part of loooooming is warping up. It does not happen in WARP SPEED like in those nerd shows. HA! I am funny! BASK!
It took a while because we had to wind skeins of yarn, then wrap it on a warp thingy that measures how long it will be and then you take that and jam it through the reed and heddles and other stuff. One time I watched a video about loooming in youtube and most of it was her warping up and I was all “Get to the looming part!!!” and now I completely understand.
I am not nearly as precise as this lady. Maybe one day. I pretty much powered through and got warped up in like 4 hours. It was ridiculous. And now we are not supposed to get too far ahead because there are things we need to do for the sampler but I CANNOT HELP MYSELF.
The first project is all white/natural colours so that’s why there is no obnoxious happening. Right now we’re just sampling texture and different weaves. I LIKE IT.
Anyways after we loomed I came home and crawled into bed because I felt like I’d been hit by a loom truck (yes I am going to call it looming, I know it is not correct but it sounds neat). Then around 5 something Maine got a call from Shelby inviting us over for dinner and who am I to say no to free dinner? On the way we stopped at one of my favourite places:
We ate and Rock Banded until quarter to midnight, and then Maine and I began our journey home. For some terrible reason it took TWO FULL HOURS to get home (I do hope they are planning to improve transit for the Olympics because 2 hours to our place is ridiculous). On the way home we were waiting for a bus outside this Chinese herbal place and I always giggle at the sign where it talks about loss of control for pee and poo. I am 5 years old.
I was in Anxiety town a little bit because I knew I had to meet Val early in the morning for the YARN SALE OF DOOM. It ended up ok. We met at 9:30 or so, and people were already lined up but we decided to go for Dim Sum.
It was funny to me because I was literally the only white person in the room, and the waitress knew Val was in charge so she didn’t talk to me at all. Also she cut the spring roll with scissors and they had plastic sheets on the table so when you are done eating they can clear it up by making a weird bag. (Yes, apparently this is common Dim Sum practice but I am clearly new to it.)
I feel a little bit weird about eating this stuff for breakfast, but it was mega delicious.
After we were done, we walked over to Three Bags Full to wait to be left in. At this point there were maybe 30 or so people ahead of us, so not really that bad.
People kept walking by looking at us like we were crazy people. (Yarn people are.)
They had delicious cupcakes! But the hilarious thing was most people zoomed past them to the yarn without even looking. I had a red velvet variety and it was magical.
I did not end up buying a super lot of yarn. Just some white Malabrigo Silky Merino. I think it might be nice to dye it and use it on maybe the second loom project?
This time around they limited the number of people who could go into the store to about 20. It was pretty nice to be able to walk around and look at stuff. Last time I went to the sale it was pretty much awful. These two ladies cut in front of me in the line for the cashier, which p.s. was like an hour long, and I wanted to destroy them. So yes, limited entering is rad even if it made this one lady almost explode because she was all “omg why can’t you let meee innnnnnnnnnn” and the guy was like “YOU WILL WAIT YOUR TURN!”.
Ok not really.
So! Then Val wanted to go to Voltage so I watched her buy some awesome stuff including this sweet sale wallet that she bought for me.
Thanks, Val!
And this is just a public service announcement to let you know that if you have an entire wall in your home dedicated to Elvis, you should probably close your blinds if you do not want me creeping in your window.
